The Tanzania Electric Supply Company (TANESCO) has held a working session with ward councillors and chairpersons of local government authorities from Ilala, Kigamboni and Temeke, aimed at strengthening cooperation in protecting and improving power infrastructure.
Speaking on behalf of the guest of honour, Dar es Salaam’s Ilala District Commissioner Edward Mpogoro said TANESCO’s performance depends heavily on strong collaboration with local leaders.
“I commend TANESCO for this initiative. I congratulate the Managing Director for embracing an inclusive approach that enhances service delivery. It would be beneficial to expand this engagement to other groups, including district commissioners,” Mpogoro said during the opening of the training seminar.
He noted that the company’s continued efforts to expand and improve electricity services are accelerating development, particularly through community participation.
The training focuses on the Government of Tanzania’s new policy direction, which seeks to devolve more responsibilities to district, ward, and local government levels.
Mpogoro added that electricity production in Dar es Salaam has increased significantly in recent years, driven by rising demand for clean energy for cooking, with more households now using electricity and gas.
“These power upgrades affect everyone, including residents in peri-urban areas. We believe this collaboration will further improve efficiency across all regions,” he said.
The seminar was honored by Dar es Salaam Regional Commissioner Albert Chalamila, who was represented by Mpogoro.
TANESCO’s Director of Communication and Customer Experience, Irene Gowelle, stated that the initiative has been in the works for a while and is part of the company’s broader mission to enhance public service.
“The government’s priority is to ensure quality service to citizens. That is why TANESCO is directly engaging these leaders to ensure faster, more coordinated service delivery across the country,” Gowelle said.
Chairperson of Dar es Salaam’s Local Government Leaders, Juma Abbas Mwingamno, welcomed the programme, saying it will significantly improve communication between citizens and their leaders.
“TANESCO has reached an impressive level of service delivery. Continuous training for leaders enhances our ability to relay accurate information back to the community. We are grateful to the government and TANESCO for this sustainable and improved service,” he said.
