Tourism and conservation actors in the Southern Highlands have been urged to take advantage of the 2025 Serengeti Conservation and Tourism Awards, a national initiative designed to recognise excellence and innovation in the sector.

The call was made on November 17 in Iringa by Dainess Kunzugala, Assistant Director in the Tourism Department, during an engagement meeting with tour companies, guides, accommodation providers, conservation experts and organisations contributing to wildlife protection.

Ms Kunzugala said the Serengeti Awards scheduled for December 2025 feature seven categories, offering stakeholders a platform to showcase their achievements and raise the visibility of the region’s tourism potential.

“This is an important opportunity for stakeholders in the Southern Highlands to submit their entries. These awards highlight the contribution of individuals and organisations that continue to drive tourism development and conservation efforts in the country,” she said.

She added that the initiative aims to stimulate growth in the sector, strengthen professionalism and encourage wider participation in protecting Tanzania’s natural heritage.

Fadhili Laizer, a tour guide with Mukuta Travel and Tours, welcomed the government’s outreach, saying the guidance on how to register for the awards will help more operators participate.

“I encourage stakeholders, especially from the Southern Highlands, to come forward in large numbers. These awards not only promote tourism but also help companies market themselves to a wider audience,” he said.

The Chairperson of the Iringa Tourism Association, Serafina Lanz, called on the government to continue investing in the Southern Highlands, noting the region’s rich conservation assets, including Nyerere and Ruaha national parks.

She proposed that future editions of the awards be named after key landscapes to reflect their importance:
“Given the ecological value of the Southern Highlands, it would be fitting to introduce award names such as the Nyerere Awards or Ruaha Awards,” she said.

The Serengeti Awards seek to celebrate outstanding contributions to conservation and tourism and to strengthen Tanzania’s position as one of Africa’s leading wildlife destinations.
