Dar es Salaam residents call on leaders to prioritize dialogue and unity

Residents of Dar es Salaam have appealed to both government and community leaders to place dialogue and unity at the centre of Tanzania’s ongoing reconciliation efforts, emphasizing that sustainable peace can only be achieved through mutual understanding between citizens and authorities.

The call comes as President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s administration renews its commitment to promoting national reconciliation and drafting a new constitution aimed at strengthening national cohesion and addressing the diverse concerns of Tanzanians.

Speaking in separate interviews in Chanika, residents urged all groups particularly political and youth movements to avoid emotional reactions and divisive rhetoric that could threaten peace.

They stressed that reconciliation should be a collective effort driven by tolerance, respect, and open communication.

“Peace is built when everyone listens to one another,” said a Chanika resident. “The government should hear the people’s voices, and the people should also give the government time to act in good faith.”

The residents’ message echoes Vice President Ambassador Dr. Emmanuel Nchimbi’s recent remarks reaffirming President Samia’s resolve to create space for dialogue and inclusion.

“It is the President’s mission to ensure that reconciliation becomes a reality so that every Tanzanian, regardless of political belief or background, feels heard and valued,” Dr. Nchimbi said during an international conference held earlier this week.

The Chanika community also reflected on the unrest of October 29, 2025, noting that the incident underscored the importance of calm and national unity.

They condemned any attempt to seek justice through violence, saying such actions only endanger Tanzania’s peace and development.

They particularly called upon young people to channel their energy toward constructive engagement and peaceful problem-solving rather than confrontation.

As discussions on reconciliation continue nationwide, citizens say they expect leaders at all levels to demonstrate integrity, openness, and a genuine commitment to restoring trust among Tanzanians viewing this as the surest path toward lasting harmony and progress.
