Comoros to refer cancer patients to Tanzania’s ocean road institute

The Government of Comoros has announced plans to refer its cancer patients to the Ocean Road Cancer Institute (ORCI) in Tanzania, citing the institute’s growing capacity and the availability of advanced cancer treatment services.

The commitment was made by the Speaker of the Parliament of Comoros, Mr. Moustadroine Abdou, during a working visit to ORCI in Dar es Salaam.

Mr. Abdou, who serves as the second-highest-ranking leader in the Comorian Government, said he was impressed with the institute’s modern medical equipment and professional expertise.

He noted that Comoros has in recent years spent a significant portion of public health resources on referring patients to Europe.

However, he said Tanzania has now reached a level where such referrals can be made within the region without compromising treatment quality.

“The technology and expertise I have seen here meet global standards. We are confident that our patients will receive quality and comprehensive treatment in Tanzania,” Mr. Abdou said.

He emphasized that peace and stability remain key to the continued development of Tanzania’s health system, describing the country as a regional destination for specialized medical care.

He congratulated President Samia Suluhu Hassan for strengthening investment in the health sector, including upgrading facilities at ORCI.

Tanzania’s Ambassador to Comoros, Said Yakubu, welcomed the move, saying cooperation in health strengthens longstanding diplomatic relations between the two countries.

The Executive Director of ORCI, Dr. Diwani Msemo, also commended the gesture, saying the institute is well-prepared to accommodate patients from Comoros.

“We are ready to receive and treat Comorian patients. This collaboration not only supports patients in need but also enhances medical diplomacy and regional cooperation,” Dr. Msemo said.

The partnership is expected to expand access to specialized cancer treatment for Comorian citizens while promoting Tanzania as a regional hub for advanced healthcare.
