The Regional Commissioner (RC) of Dar es Salaam, Albert Chalamila, met with diesel and petrol stakeholders on November 7, 2025, to discuss security measures and improve management within the petroleum sector.

The session, organized by the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA), was held in Dar es Salaam.

RC Chalamila led discussions on protecting fuel stations following recent attacks by groups of youths that resulted in fires at several outlets, causing significant losses to business owners.

The forum allowed stakeholders to share experiences and propose strategies to strengthen the sector’s resilience and prevent future incidents.

During the meeting, Chalamila expressed condolences to affected operators and reassured them of continued government support, emphasizing the vital role of the petroleum sector in both local livelihoods and the national economy.

“It is important to coordinate fuel distribution efficiently at retail points. While complete prevention of theft may not be possible, we must ensure energy reaches critical infrastructure such as telecom towers and boats,” he said.

The RC also urged the community and transport operators, particularly motorcycle and Bajaj drivers, to educate youth on the importance of protecting infrastructure and maintaining peace.

He highlighted that Dar es Salaam, as a key hub serving landlocked regions and supporting essential services, must remain safe to sustain economic and social activities.

Stakeholders expressed gratitude to the government and requested temporary flexibility from banks to reschedule loans affected by the attacks.

In response, Ilala District Commissioner Edward Mpogolo advised businesses to enhance security, including limiting unrelated commercial activity at fuel stations, to safeguard both property and customers.

The meeting reflects the need to balance continuous petroleum supply with effective security measures. Analysts note that protecting fuel infrastructure is essential to maintain trade, public services, and investor confidence in Dar es Salaam.

By promoting collaboration between government authorities, businesses, and communities, the RC emphasized that a proactive approach combining security, education, and responsible management will help ensure the petroleum sector remains robust and reliable.
