The Business Registration and Licensing Agency (BRELA) has embarked on a major digital transformation drive aimed at improving service efficiency, safeguarding business owners’ rights, and accelerating the country’s shift toward an industrial and digital economy.

The initiative targets officials from the Ministry of Industry and Trade, enhancing their understanding and use of technology to improve service delivery in areas such as company registration, trademark protection, and business licensing.

Speaking in Morogoro during a leadership and staff meeting for the ministry, the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Dr. Hashil Abdallah, urged participants to translate the Sixth-Phase Government’s agenda of improving the business environment into concrete action.

“We must go beyond discussions and ensure that the reforms we talk about are visible in the way we serve investors and entrepreneurs,” said Dr. Abdallah.

“I want you to examine in detail how we issue business and industrial licenses, identify existing challenges, and explore how we can make our systems more efficient.”he added

Dr. Abdallah said BRELA’s key role is to implement government policies under the ministry’s supervision.

He added that strengthening digital systems will improve accountability, transparency, and the overall implementation of national trade and sustainable development policies.

On his part, BRELA Chief Executive Officer, Godfrey Nyaisa, said the agency is intensifying efforts to upgrade its online systems to reduce bureaucracy and make business registration faster and safer.

“This is part of the government’s broader vision to build a digital economy and create a more investor-friendly business climate,” Nyaisa said.

“By digitising our services, we are protecting business rights while ensuring Tanzanians can register and manage their businesses from anywhere, at any time.”

Nyaisa added that the training program was designed to equip ministry officials with comprehensive knowledge of BRELA’s operations, including registration procedures, licensing frameworks, and digital platforms.

He said the aim was to ensure they become “ambassadors of the ministry” by guiding the public and businesses effectively.

“BRELA plays a crucial role in Tanzania’s business ecosystem, enforcing six key laws that underpin fair competition, investment security, and industrial growth,” he added.

BRELA Board Chairperson, Prof. Neema Mori, said the Board recognizes the importance of capacity building and will continue to support BRELA in implementing its digital agenda to foster innovation and efficiency.

“Our goal is to ensure that BRELA continues to meet its objectives, strengthen innovation, and simplify business processes across the country,” Prof. Mori said.

The digital system upgrade aligns with President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s drive to modernize public institutions and enhance the ease of doing business.

Once fully implemented, the initiative is expected to cut service delays, boost investor confidence, and accelerate Tanzania’s transition to a technology-driven economy.

With these reforms, BRELA aims to position itself not only as a service provider but also as a catalyst for inclusive and sustainable business growth across Tanzania.
