The Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Community Development, Gender, Women and Special Groups, Advocate Amon Mpanju, has called on public servants to prioritize their health, saying a healthy workforce is key to enhancing productivity and efficiency in public service delivery.

Speaking after a health screening exercise conducted for staff of the ministry on November 10, 2025, Mpanju reaffirmed the government’s ongoing efforts to strengthen the working environment and promote the well-being of public employees.

He said regular medical check-ups and wellness education are part of the government’s public service framework, which requires employers to ensure that human resources remain healthy and productive.

“If we truly want to achieve higher productivity in our workplaces, we must take care of our health. That means eating balanced meals, consuming enough fruits, drinking plenty of water, and exercising regularly,” said Adv. Mpanju.

“By maintaining good health habits, we can perform our duties more effectively and enjoy a healthy life even in old age.”he added

He also urged staff to embrace workplace wellness initiatives, stressing that good health directly contributes to improved service delivery and overall national development.

Mental health expert Dr. Isack Rugemalila, who spoke during the event, said there are about 297 types of mental disorders globally and warned that stress and poor lifestyle habits are among the leading causes.

He encouraged workers to nurture mental well-being by avoiding stress triggers, resting adequately, abstaining from alcohol, maintaining a balanced diet, and fostering supportive work relationships.

Meanwhile, Dr. Esidras Karol, an HIV/AIDS specialist from Benjamin Mkapa Hospital, noted that about one million people in Tanzania are living with HIV.

He urged public servants to remain vigilant by avoiding unprotected sex, not sharing sharp objects, and ensuring safe procedures during blood transfusions.

The health screening and awareness initiative is part of the ministry’s broader strategy to promote a culture of preventive healthcare among employees, aimed at sustaining a healthy, motivated, and high-performing public service.
