Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa on October 4, 2025, represented President Samia Suluhu Hassan at the swearing-in ceremony of Malawi’s newly elected President, Peter Mutharika, held at Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre.

Mutharika, of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP), secured a decisive victory with 56.8 percent of the vote, defeating his rival, former President Lazarus Chakwera of the Malawi Congress Party (MCP).

The new term marks Mutharika’s return to the presidency after serving from 2014 to 2020 and being unseated in the 2020 election. His comeback highlights a significant political shift in the country.

In his inaugural address, President Mutharika called for unity and dedicated leadership, urging officials to serve the people rather than personal or family interests.

“This nation belongs to all Malawians. We all need change, and I promise that change. If we want to transform our country, it must come from us, the people of Malawi,” he said, pledging that his government will deliver development across all sectors to improve the lives of citizens.

The ceremony was attended by senior government officials, diplomats, and thousands of Malawians celebrating the peaceful transfer of power.
