Former Young Africans (Yanga) player Steven Nemes has urged the club’s management to sit down with both the players and the technical bench to identify and address the root causes behind the team’s poor performance in international competitions.
Speaking to The Respondents Online following Yanga’s decision to part ways with head coach Romain Folz after a 1-0 loss to Silver Strikers in the first leg of the CAF Champions League in Malawi, Nemes said open discussions were essential to find solutions ahead of the return leg in Dar es Salaam.
He said players and the technical team should be honest about any challenges they face, whether tactical, motivational, or otherwise, so that corrective measures can be taken early.
“I can’t put the blame on the coach. I hold the players responsible because they had several clear chances but failed to score. If the problem lies in not understanding the system or not being selected regularly, they should come forward and say it,” Nemes explained.
He urged Yanga’s leadership to ensure the players work harder, show discipline, and demonstrate the hunger to win, stressing that success requires full commitment from everyone on the pitch.
“The most important thing now is for the team to focus on converting chances into goals. They must use the home advantage to overturn the result and keep their hopes alive in the Champions League,” Nemes added.
