Maasai community suspends circumcision ceremonies to participate in elections

By Our Reporter, Arusha

The Maasai community in Arusha has demonstrated its commitment to democracy by pausing traditional circumcision activities on October 29, 2025, to allow youths and other eligible citizens to take part in the general elections.

The announcement came during the launch of the annual Enkipaata circumcision season on Monday, October 20, at Oldonyosapuk village in Arumeru District.

The event, which brings together more than 2,000 youths of the Irmegoliki age set, was officiated by Arusha Regional Commissioner CPA Amos Gabriel Makalla.

RC Makalla commended the community for aligning its cultural practices with national election schedules.

“This is an excellent example of respecting tradition while fulfilling civic responsibilities. On October 29, I urge all leaders to ensure that every citizen exercises their right to vote. The government will ensure safety and a peaceful election process,” he said.

Maasai leaders, including community head Isack Meijo Ole Kisongo and the guardian of the Irmegoliki age set, said the decision reflects their recognition of the importance of voting.

They pledged to mobilize the community and lead in supporting presidential candidate Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, praising her contributions to social development and livestock programs that have benefited the Maasai.

The initiative highlights how cultural traditions can coexist with democratic duties, sending a strong message of civic responsibility ahead of the national elections.
