Government launches plan for Tanzania’s Olympic Success

By Flora Mkoloma

The government is stepping up efforts to ensure Tanzania wins medals at the Olympic Games, unveiling a strategic plan through the Ministry of Culture, Arts, and Sports.

Speaking on the initiative, Ministry Secretary General and Government Spokesperson Gerson Msigwa said Tanzania has already made history by claiming a gold medal in past competitions, and now the nation is eager for more international sporting success.

“To realize Tanzanians’ dreams of Olympic medals, we need strong strategies, proper investment, and structured government support under the sixth-phase administration,” he said.

He acknowledged Tanzania’s long history of Olympic participation without significant results, stressing that “the time to act is now. Every possible effort must be made to achieve this national aspiration.”

Mr. Msigwa said the Ministry has been analyzing why Tanzanian athletes have not secured medals in previous events. “We are addressing the root causes and have developed strategies to improve performance,” he added.

The Ministry is also reviewing governance in sports associations and their constitutions to ensure accountability and efficiency.

“We are confident that Tanzania can win medals at the Commonwealth Games next year and at the 2028 Olympics. Our efforts are not to impress others, but to serve the nation’s interests. Success in sports is a national priority,” he stated.

He explained that the initiative follows directives from President Samia Suluhu Hassan to advance strategic sports development.

“While we cheer for others’ victories, it is time for Tanzanians to achieve. We seek cooperation and understanding to make this happen,” he said.

The Ministry is preparing a model constitution to guide sports associations and federations across the country.

This framework will strengthen governance, enhance efficiency, and support athletes in reaching their full potential.
