Residents of Karema Village in Tanganyika District, Katavi Region, are now living with a renewed sense of safety and confidence following the construction of a state-of-the-art crocodile enclosure along the shores of Lake Tanganyika.

The initiative, spearheaded by the government under President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, demonstrates the administration’s commitment to protecting citizens and promoting safe coexistence with wildlife.

The enclosure, inaugurated, was built by the Tanzania Wildlife Research Institute (TAWIRI) under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism.

It is part of a broader strategy to reduce human-crocodile conflicts, which have for years posed serious risks to the community.

Tanganyika District’s Chief Environmental and Natural Resources Officer, Bruno Nicolaus, praised TAWIRI’s efforts, emphasizing the government’s commitment to citizen safety.

“This project is an example of how the government collaborates with specialized institutions to safeguard communities. Regulations will also be put in place to ensure the enclosure is properly maintained and serves its intended purpose,” said Nicolaus.

TAWIRI Researcher and Enclosure Supervisor, Selemani Moshi, advised residents on safe practices, stressing the importance of avoiding waste disposal into the lake and limiting evening activities in the water.

On behalf of the villagers, Juma Iddi expressed heartfelt thanks to the government and President Samia for restoring peace of mind to families who had long feared crocodile attacks.

“Women and children, who often work near the lake, can now go about their daily activities without fear. We are deeply grateful to President Samia for this life-saving intervention,” Iddi said.

The crocodile enclosure is expected to significantly reduce risks for residents while fostering a culture of wildlife awareness, highlighting the government’s proactive approach to human-wildlife coexistence.
