Young Africans SC (Yanga) celebrated their annual Wiki ya Mwananchi festival with a 1-0 victory over Kenya’s Bandari FC at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium on Friday evening.
The decisive moment came in the first half when Celestin Écoua converted a fine chance to put the Tanzanian champions ahead.
His goal proved enough to separate the two sides in a match that drew thousands of passionate supporters clad in green and yellow.
Bandari FC, invited as special guests for the fixture, offered strong resistance and looked dangerous on counter-attacks, but Yanga’s defensive organization ensured the hosts maintained their narrow lead until the final whistle.
After the game, Yanga players applauded their supporters, acknowledging the electrifying atmosphere inside the stadium.
Wiki ya Mwananchi, held annually, is more than just a football match. It is a day dedicated to celebrating the club’s heritage, unity, and bond with its fans, combining sport with cultural displays and entertainment.
This year’s edition once again underlined the close connection between Yanga and its followers, who turned out in large numbers to welcome the new season with optimism.
The win over Bandari has boosted confidence in the squad as they prepare for domestic league action and upcoming continental assignments.
