Tanzania marks 10 years of sustainable Development Goals

Tanzania today joined the world in marking ten years of implementing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), with a call to scale up efforts in education, healthcare, ,and infrastructure to tackle poverty.

The National Coordinator of Sahringon Tanzania Chapter and GCAP Tanzania Coalition, Ms Martina Kabisama, said the country’s vision for 2025–2050 seeks to build a competitive, inclusive, and sustainable economy.

She noted that the vision aims to sustain economic growth of more than 8 percent annually, raise life expectancy to 75 years, and expand electricity access to over 90 percent of households.

“Despite the achievements and strong development strategies in place, we still face major challenges, including widespread poverty, youth unemployment, social inequality, climate change, as well as governance and accountability gaps,” Ms Kabisama told reporters in Dar es Salaam.

Her remarks were echoed by Ms Rosemary Mwaipopo from the Global Call to Action Against Poverty (GCAP), who urged the government to protect citizens’ rights, uphold good governance, and invest more in social protection.

She said national policies and budgets must focus on building an inclusive economy and creating decent jobs for young people.

Ms Mwaipopo also called on development partners, the private sector, the UN, regional institutions, and civil society to amplify citizens’ voices especially women, youth, and persons with disabilities—to accelerate SDG implementation in Tanzania.
