The Regional Commissioner of Songwe, Mr. Jabir Omari Makame, has called on residents to work closely with the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) and the government to expose individuals involved in smuggling and tax evasion.
Speaking on August 13, 2025, during a meeting with TRA officials led by the Songwe Regional Manager, CPA Rashid Harith, Mr. Makame urged citizens to report anyone engaging in illegal trade, saying their cooperation is crucial for national development. The officials visited his office to introduce themselves ahead of a campaign to educate the public on amendments to tax laws for the 2025/2026 financial year.
“Citizens must share information about those involved in smuggling so that authorities can act. By doing so, we can build a stronger, safer country,” Mr. Makame said.
He emphasized that collaboration between residents, TRA, and security agencies will help curb smuggling, safeguard borders, and enable the authority to collect taxes needed for Tanzania’s growth.
He also praised TRA for educating traders on tax laws and their recent amendments. He urged all taxpayers to pay their taxes voluntarily, stressing that tax compliance is the foundation of national development.
“Paying taxes determines the kind of Tanzania we are building. It allows us to improve health services, strengthen education, and develop critical infrastructure like roads,” Mr. Makame added.
CPA Paul Walalaze, TRA Manager for Taxpayer Education, said the authority reaches citizens and businesses at the start of each financial year through seminars, radio programs, and other channels.
He explained that the initiatives aim to help the public understand new tax regulations and pay taxes easily and voluntarily.
“Through our Taxpayer Education and Communication Department, TRA actively informs businesses and citizens nationwide about changes in the Finance Act so they can comply accurately and with ease,” CPA Walalaze said.
He added that one key amendment affects the Income Tax Act, particularly in filing returns and corporate tax procedures.
Local traders welcomed the education campaign, promising to continue paying taxes voluntarily. They also encouraged TRA to maintain awareness programs to help them meet tax obligations on time and avoid difficulties.
