The 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN) will officially kick off today, August 2, with host nation Tanzania opening the tournament against Burkina Faso at the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium in Dar es Salaam. Kick-off is scheduled for 8:00 PM.
Tanzania, along with co-hosts Kenya and Uganda, is staging this year’s regional CHAN tournament, which features national teams composed exclusively of players active in their domestic leagues.
The opening clash between Taifa Stars and Burkina Faso is expected to set the tone for a highly competitive tournament.
Speaking at a joint pre-match press conference held on Friday, August 1, coaches and players from both sides expressed their readiness and optimism ahead of the opener.
Taifa Stars head coach Hemed Suleiman 'Morocco' said his team is well-prepared and confident, having spent significant time studying their West African opponents.
“We’re ready to face any team in this competition. I’ve followed Burkina Faso for a long time and understand how they play. Our training camp and friendly matches have helped us build chemistry and reduce pressure among the players,” said Coach Morocco.
He added that the inclusion of promising young players, blended with experienced squad members, has created a balanced team capable of competing at the highest level.
“I am pleased with how our youth players have stepped up during preparations. They’ve worked hand-in-hand with the senior players. Our mission is to fight for every point and retain the trophy here at home,” he said.
Coach Morocco confirmed that the team is largely injury-free, with only midfielder Clement Mzize nursing a minor knock, though he remains in contention for selection pending medical clearance.
He also called on fans to turn out in large numbers to cheer the team, stressing the importance of home support in motivating the players.
“Our fans are the 12th player. Their presence gives the boys extra strength. I urge all Tanzanians to come and support us tomorrow,” he added.
Goalkeeper Aishi Manula, who spoke on behalf of the squad, echoed the coach’s sentiments, noting that the team is focused on securing maximum points in the group stage.
“We’re determined to start strong. Playing at home is a huge advantage, and we’re committed to collecting as many points as possible,” said Manula.
He described the 2024 CHAN as the biggest football event ever hosted by Tanzania and a crucial platform for local talents to showcase their abilities to international scouts.
“This is a great opportunity for emerging players. I commend the technical bench for giving them a chance to shine. We’re motivated to deliver,” he added.
On the opposite bench, Burkina Faso’s head coach Issa Balbone acknowledged the quality of the Tanzanian side but maintained confidence in his own team’s readiness, despite arriving later than planned.
“We know Tanzania have many talented players, but we’re also well-prepared and excited to compete. Our focus is on starting the tournament with a win,” Balbone stated.
Burkina Faso defender Patrick Ilalo, speaking on behalf of his teammates, said they are determined to honor their country by competing for the title.
“We are fully prepared. We respect Tanzania, but we’re not intimidated by playing away in the opening match. Our goal is to follow our coach’s instructions and aim for the trophy,” Ilalo said.
As excitement builds across Dar es Salaam and beyond, tomorrow’s clash promises to offer high-intensity football and a glimpse of what CHAN 2024 has in store.
For the Taifa Stars, it is more than just a match it is a chance to set the pace on home soil and inspire the nation.
