Tanzania’s Office of the Solicitor General has earned recognition for its effective management of civil claims and arbitration, a move that has helped speed up dispute resolution and unlock resources for the country’s major development projects.
During a visit to the Solicitor General’s pavilion at the 49th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair (DITF), Eliakim Maswi, Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Constitution and Legal Affairs, highlighted the office’s critical role in improving government efficiency and driving socio-economic progress.
“The professionalism and commitment demonstrated in managing civil litigation, constitutional cases, human rights, and electoral disputes have significantly reduced court backlogs,” Maswi said.
“This has allowed for faster resolution through negotiation and alternative dispute resolution mechanisms.”he added
By resolving disputes more efficiently, the government has saved costs that are now reinvested into key infrastructure projects.
These include the 2,115 MW Julius Nyerere Hydropower Plant on the Rufiji River, the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR), the Kidunda Dam, new hospitals, roads, schools, shipbuilding on Lake Victoria, and the upcoming Msalato International Airport in Dodoma.
“These projects will be game changers for Tanzania’s economy and the welfare of its people,” Maswi added.
The Solicitor General’s Office is also prioritizing legal aid and public awareness. At the trade fair, it has been providing visitors with valuable information on their legal rights and how to navigate the judicial system in areas such as civil claims and constitutional rights.
Mercy Kyamba, Assistant Director for Quality Assurance, explained that participating in the DITF is part of a broader strategy to expand the office’s outreach and strengthen partnerships with government bodies key to managing legal cases and dispute resolution.
The 49th Dar es Salaam International Trade Fair, officially opened on July 7 by Zanzibar President Dr. Hussein Ali Mwinyi, remains an important platform for public-private dialogue and government engagement with citizens.
