Ndumbaro reminds politicians to obey laws during elections

As Tanzania heads toward the 2025 General Election, the government has reminded political actors that the law remains active and binding, regardless of the election season.

Minister for Constitution and Legal Affairs, Dr. Damas Ndumbaro, has warned politicians against assuming they are above the law during campaign periods. He emphasized that no political leader has immunity when it comes to criminal offences.

“The law doesn’t go on holiday during elections,” he said. “If any political leader—whether from the ruling party or the opposition, commits a crime, they must be held accountable.”

Dr. Ndumbaro issued the warning in Dodoma today during a ceremony where 16 vehicles were handed over to the National Prosecutions Office. The vehicles will be used in district offices to strengthen legal operations at the grassroots.

He instructed prosecutors to carry out their responsibilities professionally and without favouritism, urging them to handle cases strictly according to the law.

“Don’t look at a person’s political affiliation or status. If the police arrest someone and the case is properly investigated, take them to court,” he said.

His statement comes amid growing political activity across the country, with parties preparing for the 2025 polls.

The Minister warned that overlooking minor violations could lead to bigger problems.

“Many of the conflicts we see during elections start with small offences that are ignored. These can later escalate into serious chaos,” he noted.

The warning reflects the government’s strategy to maintain order and strengthen the rule of law during what is expected to be a heated election period.

It also places pressure on legal institutions to act independently and ensure justice is served, regardless of political pressure.

The vehicles handed over are part of wider efforts to improve access to justice and enhance the efficiency of the prosecution system at the district level.
