Iringa Regional Commissioner, Mr. Kheri James, has commended the Tanzania Electric Supply Company Limited (TANESCO) for its continued efforts to strengthen the power supply network across the region, saying the current electricity situation is significantly contributing to economic development.

Speaking during the official visit of TANESCO’s Managing Director, Mr. Lazaro Twange, to Iringa on July 22, 2025, Mr. James said residents and businesses are now benefiting from a stable and reliable electricity supply, which is boosting productivity and livelihoods.

“The power situation in Iringa is now calm and satisfactory. We appreciate TANESCO’s commitment to service excellence, its timely communication, and the good working relationship with regional authorities,” said Mr. James.

The visit was part of Mr. Twange’s two-day inspection tour of various power projects in the region, including the strategic Tanzania-Zambia (TAZA) Interconnector Project.

The project aims to link Tanzania’s national grid with Zambia's through a high-voltage transmission line stretching from Iringa to Sumbawanga.

“This is a flagship regional energy project. So far, 67 percent of the transmission line construction has been completed,” Mr. Twange said, noting that the project is being implemented at an estimated cost of TSh 1.5 trillion.

“The line will not only connect Tanzania with Zambia but also strengthen the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP), creating opportunities for power trade and improved grid reliability,” he added.

In support of the national campaign “Electricity: The Most Affordable and Clean Energy for Cooking,” Mr. Twange handed over energy-efficient electric stoves to the Regional Commissioner and the Iringa Regional Administrative Secretary, Ms. Doris Kalasa.

He urged regional leaders to help educate the public about the benefits of clean cooking.

“One of TANESCO’s key strategic priorities is to promote electricity as a clean, safe, and cost-effective alternative for household cooking,” said Mr. Twange.

“We encourage leaders to spread awareness and inspire citizens to adopt electric cooking appliances.”he added

The campaign is part of TANESCO’s broader commitment to support national climate goals, reduce reliance on charcoal and firewood, and improve indoor air quality in homes.

Mr. Twange’s visit underscores TANESCO’s commitment to transparency, engagement with stakeholders, and acceleration of projects that expand access to energy and improve service quality in Tanzania’s growing regions.
