The Agency for the Development of Education Management (ADEM) has launched a three-day training programme aimed at strengthening the capacity of 343 Ward Education Officers from Mbeya and Lindi regions in managing education at the ward level.
Opening the training in Bagamoyo, ADEM Chief Executive Officer Dr. Maulid J. Maulid said Ward Education Officers play a key role in ensuring effective delivery of education services.
He stressed the need for strong supervision to improve the quality of education in schools.
“Ward Education Officers are responsible for overseeing education activities at the ward level. It is important to build their capacity so they can supervise effectively and help improve education outcomes,” said Dr. Maulid.
He said ADEM has already trained all headteachers in school leadership and management. Now, the focus is on ensuring Ward Education Officers are equipped to follow up on the implementation of teaching and learning in schools under their jurisdiction.
“We have trained all headteachers to manage teaching and learning in schools. But Ward Education Officers must monitor what is happening in those schools. That is why this training is necessary — to enable you to carry out strong supervision of education activities in your wards,” Dr. Maulid explained.
He also reminded participants that the goal of the training is not just knowledge, but results.
“We expect to see positive changes, starting from schools up to the ward level. What you learn here should become a guide for improving education management,” he added.
The training, supported by the BOOST project under the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology, runs from July 2–4, 2025.
It covers topics such as leadership and governance in education, local-level education development planning, school monitoring and supervision, infrastructure management, internal auditing, community involvement, and handling complaints in the education sector.
According to the coordinator of short-term training, Mr. Huruma Mwenga, the programme is designed to help officers understand their responsibilities more clearly and to ensure their efforts lead to real improvements.
“This training will help Ward Education Officers gain skills in school supervision, infrastructure planning, and engaging communities. They will also learn how to resolve challenges that affect education delivery,” he said.
BOOST is a national initiative focused on improving the quality and equity of basic education across Tanzania.
