The Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) has urged accountants and tax consultants to take a proactive role in supporting businesses to comply with tax regulations, stressing that accurate and timely tax payments are key to strengthening the country’s domestic revenue base.
Speaking during the official opening of a three-day seminar on tax law amendments, TRA’s Commissioner for Domestic Revenue, Alfred Mregi, said accountants and tax professionals are strategically positioned to influence voluntary tax compliance, given their direct involvement in managing and validating businesses’ financial records.
“Accountants have a significant role to play in encouraging voluntary tax compliance by helping business owners file their taxes correctly and on time,” said Mregi, noting that their knowledge and integrity are critical to reducing non-compliance and enhancing trust in the tax system.
The seminar, held at the APC Conference Hall in Bunju, Dar es Salaam, has been organized by the National Board of Accountants and Auditors (NBAA) in collaboration with TRA. It brings together financial professionals from across the country to discuss recent changes in tax laws and their practical implications on business operations.
According to Mregi, the participation of accountants and tax consultants is essential in ensuring that financial statements reflect accurate data, especially during annual audits that inform tax assessments.
“These professionals must be well-versed in the latest tax legislation so they can guide their clients appropriately and help avoid unintentional errors that lead to penalties or revenue loss,” he emphasized.
NBAA Executive Director, CPA Pius Maneno, highlighted the enduring partnership between NBAA and TRA, saying the two institutions have worked together for over 25 years to equip financial professionals with up-to-date knowledge on tax and accounting standards.
“This seminar is part of our joint commitment to ensure that practitioners, including accountants, auditors, lecturers and other stakeholders, are well-informed and prepared to support the national tax agenda,” said CPA Maneno.
He added that the seminar will feature a wide range of presentations covering taxation, auditing, and accounting, with a focus on the fiscal policy changes introduced in the 2025/2026 financial year.
The initiative comes at a time when the government continues to promote domestic resource mobilization as a cornerstone for financing development priorities.
With growing expectations on public service delivery, ensuring effective tax compliance through professional support has become more important than ever.
By empowering accountants and tax consultants, TRA and NBAA aim to enhance transparency, improve taxpayer education, and contribute to a more robust and inclusive tax system.
