The Zanzibar Volleyball League is gaining impressive momentum, with teams battling fiercely for supremacy as the competition intensifies across the islands.

In one of the most anticipated matches so far, Nyuki delivered a stunning performance, defeating reigning champions Mafunzo in straight sets (3-0) during their first-round clash held today, June 27, 2025, in Zanzibar.

Speaking to The Respondent Online, the Chairperson of the Zanzibar Volleyball Federation (ZVF) Technical Commission, Ameir Msimu, praised the rising level of competitiveness, highlighting how the season has already produced surprising outcomes.

“This year’s league is more competitive than ever. The defending champions, Mafunzo, have lost today. Nyuki remain unbeaten, and even strong contenders like Police have dropped matches. The race is wide open,” Msimu noted.

He also announced that teams from Unguja have received sponsorship from the Pondeza Foundation, which is supporting the league by providing playing kits to all participating teams an initiative expected to further promote the development of volleyball on the islands.

The 2025 Zanzibar Volleyball League features nine participating teams. In the men’s division are Mafunzo, Nyuki, Police, JKU, and KVZ, while the women’s category includes KMKM, JKU, Mafunzo, and KVZ.

Msimu further revealed that four additional teams from Pemba are expected to join the league in August during a playoff round that will bring together top teams from both Unguja and Pemba.

The playoffs will determine who qualifies for the semi-finals and finals in both the men's and women's categories.

Winners of the league will walk away with trophies, medals, and cash prizes, with the exact monetary awards to be announced at a later stage.

As the league progresses, fans can expect more thrilling matches, surprise upsets, and a growing sense of unity and passion for volleyball in Zanzibar.
