Dar es Salaam. The National Environment Management Council (NEMC) has urged industrial investors in Temeke District to strictly follow environmental laws to ensure sustainable development and environmental protection.
This call was made during a one-day training workshop held on June 18, 2025, aimed at raising awareness among factory owners on legal requirements related to environmental protection, including the implementation of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs).
Speaking during the session, NEMC Temeke Zonal Manager Abeli Sembeka said many investors do not fully comply with the conditions outlined in their environmental certificates, a situation that poses risks to public health and natural resources.
“Investors must understand that receiving an EIA certificate is not the end of the process. What matters most is implementing the conditions attached to that certificate,” he said.
Mr. Sembeka added that the workshop was part of the council’s ongoing efforts to strengthen environmental governance at the local level, particularly in fast-growing industrial zones like Temeke.
For his part, NEMC’s Manager for Legal Compliance, Hamadi Taimuru, encouraged investors to share the knowledge they gained with others in the sector.
“We hope these participants will become ambassadors of compliance and help influence positive change within their networks,” he said.
One of the participants, Fatma Shabani from Zenufa Laboratories Limited, thanked NEMC for the training, noting that such sessions are crucial in helping industries align with national environmental goals.
“We urge NEMC to continue with these awareness programmes so that all investors understand their roles in environmental management,” she said.
Also present were environmental officers from the Temeke Municipal Council and representatives from the Confederation of Tanzania Industries (CTI), who stressed the importance of collaboration between regulators and the private sector in protecting the environment.
