Deputy Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Community Development, Gender, Women and Special Groups, Felister Mdemu, has called on Tanzanian women to strengthen unity, share opportunities, and support one another in order to fully benefit from the economic empowerment initiatives spearheaded by the government under President Samia Suluhu Hassan’s leadership.

Speaking during a high-level forum held in Iringa on June 22, 2025, ahead of the International Widows and Widowers Day, Mdemu emphasized the need for women to embrace a spirit of collaboration rather than competition, and to actively disseminate information on available opportunities such as the 10 percent local government loans earmarked for women, youth, and persons with disabilities.

“Let’s stop the cycle of envy and resentment. Let’s love one another, work together, and share information about the many economic opportunities made available to us. President Samia has opened multiple avenues for women’s empowerment what remains is for us to take action and support each other,” said Mdemu.

She further urged women to rise beyond social limitations and participate in leadership and decision-making processes at all levels, including contesting for elective positions.

Director of Gender Development at the Ministry, Badru Abdunur, commended the Iringa regional authorities for hosting the forum, which brought together widows and widowers to discuss their unique challenges and chart a way forward.

“This gathering has not only provided a platform for sharing experiences but has also empowered participants with practical knowledge. We are confident that these insights will help you overcome challenges and tap into the many support mechanisms the government continues to provide,” said Abdunur.

Also speaking at the event, Saida Mgeni, a Community Development Officer from the Iringa Regional Commissioner’s Office, urged women to cultivate financial discipline and develop a saving culture, no matter how little they earn.

She emphasized the importance of managing inherited assets with integrity, especially for widows who bear the responsibility of safeguarding family welfare after the loss of a partner.

Participants, including widows and widowers from across the region, expressed appreciation to the government for recognizing their needs and organizing a dedicated platform to listen, engage, and respond to their concerns.

The forum forms part of broader national efforts to promote inclusivity, economic empowerment, and social protection for vulnerable groups, in line with Tanzania’s commitment to sustainable development and gender equality.
