Kenya defeats South Sudan 4-0 at CECAFA women’s championship

Dar es Salaam, Tanzania — Kenya’s women’s football team delivered a commanding 4-0 victory over South Sudan on Wednesday in their opening match of the CECAFA Senior Women Championship 2025 at the Azam Complex Stadium in Chamazi.

The Harambee Starlets took an early lead in just the second minute through Faith Mboya, setting the tone for a dominant performance. 

Kenya doubled their advantage in first-half stoppage time when Violeth Wanyonyi found the net, sending the teams into the break with a 2-0 lead.

South Sudan struggled to mount any significant challenge, as Kenya controlled possession and created numerous scoring opportunities. 

In the second half, Martha Emedot extended Kenya’s lead in the 65th minute before Elizabeth Ochaka sealed the comprehensive win with a goal in stoppage time.

The result positions Kenya as strong contenders in the regional tournament featuring top women’s teams from East and Central Africa vying for CECAFA honors.

Kenya’s starting lineup featured Annedy Kwamasi; defenders Janet Mumo, Medina Abubakari, Faith Mboya, and Tumaini Nafula; midfielders Tabitha Amoit, Martha Emedot, and Alice Muderi; and forwards Emily Morang’a, Elizabeth Ochaka, and Violeth Wanyonyi.

South Sudan’s squad included Nawal Isaac, Awut Madut, Monica Nakamu, Ambayo Wilson, Sumaya Malili, Mary Anger Bol, Amina Kenyi, Paska John, Ludia Maika, Amama Issa, and Poni Wani.

The CECAFA Senior Women Championship continues with more group stage fixtures scheduled throughout the week.
