Ilala Traders call for sustained door-to-door tax education campaigns

Small-scale traders operating at the Segerea junction in Kipawa Ward, Ilala District, have called on the Tanzania Revenue Authority (TRA) to institutionalise and sustain its door-to-door tax education campaigns, citing the initiative’s role in improving compliance and raising awareness among informal business operators.

The appeal was made on Friday, June 27, 2025, during a routine outreach programme by TRA officials aimed at providing tax education and listening to traders’ concerns at the grassroots level.

According to the traders, the direct engagement gives them an opportunity to learn about their rights and obligations under the country’s tax laws, especially as many operate in the informal sector with limited access to formal training or advisory services.

“This door-to-door approach helps us understand our responsibilities better. We not only get to ask questions and receive clarification, but we also meet other traders who are just starting out and need guidance,” said one of the traders.

TRA officials used the occasion to encourage traders who had not yet undergone tax assessment to visit nearby TRA offices for formal evaluation and to fulfil their tax obligations before or by June 30, 2025.

The campaign is part of TRA’s broader efforts to promote voluntary tax compliance and broaden the national tax base by reaching underserved business communities.

Officials noted that continuous education remains key to demystifying tax processes and fostering a culture of compliance, especially among micro and small-scale enterprises, which play a significant role in the national economy.
