The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, Dr. Hassan Abbasi, has called on Tanzanians particularly those in the western zone to embrace Tabora ZOO as a premier destination for leisure, education, and nature-based tourism.

Speaking during his official visit to the wildlife garden on June 23, 2025, Dr Abbasi expressed deep satisfaction with the park’s natural endowment and strategic location in the heart of Tabora Municipality.

He said the government recognises its potential and is committed to elevating its status through robust infrastructure development.

“This is a rare gem. Having over 27 hectares of preserved wildlife space in the middle of an urban setting is a major achievement,” Dr Abbasi said.

“To the people of Tabora, this is your heritage. Make it part of your lifestyle come to relax, explore, and learn. I also encourage students and visitors from across the western corridor to take advantage of this facility.”he added

He said the government, through the Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA), is scaling up efforts to modernise the park by introducing visitor-friendly amenities.

Planned improvements include new picnic areas, children’s recreational spaces, enhanced food and beverage services, and the expansion of wildlife habitats and water ponds.

“These enhancements are part of a broader vision to position Tabora ZOO as a model for urban wildlife tourism in Tanzania. It’s not just about wildlife it’s about creating an inclusive space that serves families, schools, and researchers alike,” he noted.

During the tour, Dr Abbasi inspected recent developments implemented by TAWA, including the construction of a modern Visitor Information Centre (VIC), improved animal enclosures, and the growing population of wildlife species such as lions, leopards, cheetahs, hyenas, and others.

He commended TAWA for their continued dedication to wildlife conservation and urban tourism promotion, describing Tabora ZOO as an evolving tourism asset that deserves both local pride and national attention.

One of only a handful of wildlife parks located within city limits in Tanzania, Tabora ZOO continues to draw praise for its calm ambience, well-maintained landscapes, and educational value. It has increasingly become a hub for students, families, and travellers seeking a serene wildlife experience without leaving town.

Dr Abbasi’s visit is part of broader efforts by the Ministry to revitalise domestic tourism and ensure that lesser-known destinations receive the support they need to thrive and contribute to local economies.
