President Ruto struck by Shoe during Kehancha Rally

In a shocking incident on Sunday, May 4, 2025, Kenyan President William Ruto was struck by a shoe thrown from the crowd while delivering a speech in Kehancha town, Migori County, Western Kenya.

The President was addressing local residents during the third day of his tour in the region when the incident occurred.

A video widely shared on social media shows a shoe flying through the air and hitting the President on his left arm  with reports indicating it also grazed his head.

Just moments before the incident, Ruto was emphasizing the government’s efforts to reduce agricultural costs. “We must reduce the cost of farm inputs…” he said, before being abruptly interrupted by the projectile.

His security team quickly sprang into action, shielding the Head of State and temporarily halting the rally. The event resumed a few minutes later under heightened security.

Police have confirmed the arrest of three individuals in connection with the incident. “We have three suspects in custody, and investigations are ongoing,” said a senior police officer from Kuria West, speaking on condition of anonymity.

The officer added, “Preliminary intelligence suggests this could have been politically motivated and may have been planned ahead of the President’s visit.”

Authorities believe they are closing in on a key suspect believed to be the mastermind behind the act. “We’re pursuing strong leads, and we expect more arrests soon,” the officer noted.

The act has sparked widespread condemnation from leaders across the political divide. Kehancha MP Martha Ogola stated, “This was an attack not just on the President, but on our democracy. Violence has no place in political discourse.”

Despite the incident, President Ruto continued with his tour schedule, reiterating the government's commitment to supporting farmers.

“No act of provocation will stop us from delivering our promises to the people,” he said later in the day.

The President's team has yet to issue an official statement, but the investigation remains ongoing as Kenyans react with a mix of outrage and concern.
