Deputy Minister for Health, Dr. Godwin Mollel, has revealed that 70 percent of hospitals in Tanzania have now integrated into the National Health Insurance Fund’s (NHIF) digital system a move designed to streamline and expedite the processing of health insurance claims.

Dr. Mollel noted that, despite the legal window allowing for claims to be settled within 60 days, payments are currently being made in less than 50 days on average.

He credited this efficiency to the government's increased use of technology and ongoing verification systems that run concurrently with payment processes.

Responding to a supplementary question from Ndanda MP, Cecil Mwambe who asked whether NHIF’s 60-day payment window affects service delivery in national and zonal hospitals Dr. Mollel emphasized that the government is committed to timely payments.

He added that robust control systems have been put in place to eliminate delays that could negatively impact healthcare services for the public.

On NHIF services for military personnel, Dr. Mollel said the Ministry of Health will work closely with the Ministry of Defence to explore ways to improve healthcare coverage for soldiers under the national health insurance scheme.

Earlier, in response to a primary question, Dr. Mollel reported that by the end of March 2025, the government, through NHIF, had disbursed a total of TSh 525.9 billion to healthcare providers who served insured beneficiaries.

He also confirmed that NHIF is currently processing claims for April 2025, with payments progressing smoothly and efficiently.

The Deputy Minister reiterated the government’s broader commitment to reforming the health insurance system prioritizing greater transparency, faster claim settlements, and the resolution of challenges that could hinder access to quality healthcare services for all citizens.
