Dar es Salaam, April 11, 2025 — The Zanzibar Ministry of Health has announced the launch of Zanzibar Afya Week 2025 (ZAW2025), a weeklong public health campaign designed to improve healthcare delivery, promote medical tourism, and advance innovation in the health sector across the archipelago.

Set to run from May 4 to May 10, 2025, across both Unguja and Pemba, the initiative is a collaboration between the Ministry and two Zanzibar-based private sector partners, Zenji Zuri Consultancy and Equinox Company.

Addressing journalists in Dar es salaam, Permanent Secretary of the Minister of health, Dr. Mngereza Mzee Miraji, said that the campaign aims to foster stronger ties between the government, development partners, private stakeholders, and the wider community in delivering equitable and modern healthcare services.

“Zanzibar Afya Week is a strategic initiative intended to unite communities, government institutions, NGOs, and the private sector in a shared vision of better health outcomes,” said Dr. Miraji. “It also reflects our commitment to embracing technological advancement and innovation within the healthcare system.”

Themed “Advancing Health, Innovation, and Wellness in Zanzibar,” this year’s event supports the government’s broader goals of expanding healthcare access, modernizing medical systems, and building a sustainable health sector for all.

ZAW2025 will feature a series of activities, including medical exhibitions, stakeholder conferences, expert seminars, community health outreaches, and public education campaigns.

Select contributors and participants will also receive certificates of recognition for their roles in advancing health in the region.

Speaking on behalf of the Minister of Health, Dr. Miraji noted that the 2025 edition carries four primary objectives: boosting medical tourism, increasing public health literacy, encouraging the use of digital technologies in health, and deepening public-private partnerships (PPPs) in the health sector.

The Ministry has called on leaders, civil society organizations, academic institutions, and residents of Mainland Tanzania to actively participate in and support the event.

The Mainland’s Ministry of Health is also expected to collaborate on the campaign to ensure broad national engagement.

“Zanzibar Afya Week is not just a local initiative — it’s a national movement,” Dr. Miraji emphasized. “We invite our counterparts from Mainland Tanzania to join us in this effort to transform health outcomes across the country.”

The official announcement of ZAW2025 was previously made by Zanzibar’s Minister of Health, Hon. Nassor Ahmed Mazrui, during a keynote address at the Golden Tulip Hotel at Zanzibar, on March 29, 2025.

The launch of ZAW2025 marks a significant moment in Zanzibar’s ongoing health sector reform efforts, coming at a time when the region is increasingly positioning itself as a hub for both quality healthcare and medical investment.
