Morogoro – Accurate and timely weather forecasts are playing a vital role in protecting lives and property across Tanzania, thanks to efforts by the Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA).
This was highlighted during the opening of a seminar in Morogoro focused on strengthening community resilience against climate change and extreme weather events.
The seminar, held on April 15, 2025 in Morogoro, was part of a project aimed at reducing the loss and damage caused by such events.
Speaking at the event, Dr. Rozalia Rwegasira, Acting Regional Administrative Secretary for Economic and Production Affairs in Morogoro, praised TMA for its continued efforts to improve weather services.
“Weather forecasts have significantly improved, and warnings about heavy rainfall and extreme weather are now issued on time, helping to save lives and protect property. We thank and commend the government through TMA for this important work,” said Dr. Rozalia.
She also pledged support from the regional administration to ensure the success of the project.
“On behalf of the Regional Commissioner’s Office, we promise to provide full cooperation in the implementation of this project. It is our aim that the information generated by TMA will benefit the public and stakeholders, helping them to take early precautions and reduce the impact of severe weather.”
Dr. Ladislaus Chang’a, Acting Director General of TMA, who also serves as Tanzania’s Permanent Representative to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and Vice Chair of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), expressed his gratitude to the government.
“I take this opportunity to sincerely thank the Government of the United Republic of Tanzania for its continued investment and support to the Tanzania Meteorological Authority. These efforts have strengthened weather services in the country by providing policies, strategies, and an enabling environment that fosters innovation and excellence,” said Dr. Chang’a.
He emphasized that the government’s investment in weather infrastructure is the main reason behind the improved weather information and urged citizens to follow and respect the forecasts and alerts provided by TMA, including observing the Meteorological Authority Act No. 2 of 2019 and its regulations.
TMA also extended its appreciation to the Tanzania Commission for Science and Technology (COSTECH) for funding the project. The support is expected to improve the country's readiness in facing the challenges of climate change and extreme weather conditions.
