TASAC receives modern ambulance boat to boost search and rescue operations

The Tanzania Shipping Agencies Corporation (TASAC) has officially received a modern ambulance boat to support search and rescue (SAR) operations, in a significant step towards enhancing maritime safety on the country’s major lakes, particularly Lake Victoria.

Speaking during the handover ceremony held on April 11, 2025, at the Port of Mtwara, TASAC’s Acting Manager for Ship Registration and Inspection, Engineer Said Kaheneko, said the boat is part of the government’s commitment under the 2020–2025 CCM Election Manifesto.

Through TASAC, the government plans to procure a total of five SAR boats to strengthen emergency response in water transport.

The newly received boat is equipped to accommodate up to 16 patients at once. It has four patient beds, including two intensive care (ICU) units, and a lower deck that can carry 12 additional patients.

The vessel is also fitted with first aid equipment, allowing emergency care to be administered on board before reaching a medical facility — a development that is expected to significantly improve survival chances during maritime emergencies.

Engineer Kaheneko also revealed that two more SAR boats, procured under the Regional Lake Victoria Transport and Communication Project (MLVMCT), are in the final stages of inspection and are expected to arrive in Tanzania by the end of May.

In addition, on April 3, 2025, TASAC signed another contract to purchase two additional boats, which are expected to be ready by September 2025. The 2025/2026 national budget also includes funding for the acquisition of three more SAR boats, which will bring TASAC’s total SAR fleet to seven vessels.

Meanwhile, TASAC’s Public Relations and Marketing Manager, Mr. Saidi Mkabakuli, expressed gratitude to the President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, for supporting the initiative.

He emphasized the positive impact the ambulance boat will have on communities living on and around Lake Victoria.

“We are thankful to the President for facilitating the availability of this boat, which brings great relief to islanders and those whose livelihoods depend on Lake Victoria. This ambulance boat will be a vital resource during emergencies on water,” said Mr. Mkabakuli.

He added that the availability of the boat will not only enhance maritime safety but also support economic activities dependent on the country’s Great Lakes.
