Tanzania is gearing up for its debut in the first-ever Netball Challenge Cup, set to take place later this year in Nairobi, Kenya.

Dr. Devotha Marwa, Chairperson of the Tanzania Netball Association (CHANETA), confirmed the country’s participation, describing the competition as a milestone for the sport in the region.

She noted that this marks the tournament’s inaugural edition, and Tanzania is excited to be part of its launch.

“This is a valuable opportunity for our players to gain international experience and test their skills against other strong teams in the region,” said Dr. Marwa. “It’s also a step forward in raising the profile of netball in Tanzania.”

She added that various clubs across the country are actively training in preparation for the tournament, with the goal of performing well and securing recognition on the regional stage.

“We have encouraged all our member clubs to take this seriously. Performing well in such a major competition will not only build confidence among our players but also inspire more young girls to take up the sport,” she said.

In addition to the Challenge Cup, preparations are also ongoing for the East Africa Netball Championships, which will be hosted in Zanzibar from May 10 to 20 this year.

Dr. Marwa explained that although Zanzibar will serve as the official host, CHANETA is working closely with teams from Mainland Tanzania to ensure the country fields strong contenders in the tournament.

“Hosting the East African Championships is a great honor for Zanzibar, and we are using this opportunity to strengthen collaboration between Mainland and Island teams,” she said.

She emphasized the importance of teamwork and unity in achieving success, adding that both events will help raise the standard of netball across the country.

Tanzania’s involvement in the two upcoming tournaments signals renewed energy in the sport’s development.

With intensified preparations, increased visibility, and support from CHANETA, the netball community remains optimistic that the nation’s athletes will deliver strong performances and bring pride to the country.
