President of the United Republic of Tanzania, Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, is expected to officially inaugurate the JP Magufuli Bridge Kigongo-Busisi in Mwanza this May, opening it for public use.
The landmark project is among the flagship and strategic infrastructure developments completed under her administration.
The bridge, which stretches three kilometers across Lake Victoria, connects the Mwanza and Geita regions. It is set to become one of the largest bridges in East and Central Africa and a major catalyst for economic growth in the Lake Zone.
Speaking in Parliament during the budget debate for the Prime Minister’s Office for the 2025/26 financial year, Minister for Works Abdallah Ulega said, “The Kigongo-Busisi Bridge is a game-changer.
It reflects the government's commitment to transforming infrastructure and connecting people to opportunities. We are proud to see this project nearing its official launch.”
He added that the bridge would significantly ease transportation and reduce travel time for thousands of commuters and traders who previously relied on ferries. “It’s not just a bridge it’s a symbol of progress and regional integration,” said Ulega.
The Minister also shared updates on other infrastructure projects, including the ongoing construction of the Pangani Bridge and ring roads in Dodoma.
He commended the leadership of Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa, stating, “The Prime Minister’s close oversight of government projects has been instrumental in ensuring timely delivery and quality implementation.”
Highlighting the broader achievements of the Sixth Phase Government, Ulega noted that in just four years under President Samia’s leadership, the country has seen the completion of 1,365 kilometers of paved roads.
“This is a clear demonstration of our resolve to ensure all-weather roads reach every corner of the country,” he said.
Ulega also acknowledged the input from Members of Parliament during the budget discussion. “Nearly 20 MPs raised critical issues concerning infrastructure in their constituencies,” he said.
“I want to assure them that the government has already started addressing those new requests for road construction.”
The upcoming inauguration of the JP Magufuli Bridge stands as a milestone achievement for the Sixth Phase Government and a tribute to its commitment to inclusive and sustainable development across Tanzania.
