Parliament has lauded the Government of Tanzania and the Minister for Works, Abdallah Ulega, for their prompt response in restoring communication on the Southern Highway, which had been severely disrupted due to flooding caused by heavy rains.

The restoration of the highway has significantly alleviated the hardships faced by citizens and revived key economic activities in the region.

Speaking during a session in Parliament today, Deputy Speaker Mussa Azzan Zungu emphasized that the government’s quick intervention in repairing the road had minimized the suffering of the affected communities and facilitated the resumption of essential services, such as transport, trade, and agriculture, which are crucial to the southern regions of the country.

“The steps taken to restore the communication have reduced the suffering of the citizens and allowed economic activities to resume,” Zungu stated.

“This has been a significant relief for the people in the region who depend on this road for their daily livelihood.”

The Southern Highway, a major transport route connecting various regions of Tanzania, experienced substantial damage due to torrential rains.

The floods caused extensive road closures, leaving communities isolated and hampering the movement of goods and people.

The disruption severely impacted daily life and economic operations, particularly for those who rely on the highway for the transportation of agricultural produce, commercial goods, and essential services.

In response to the crisis, Minister Abdallah Ulega and officials from the Ministry of Works, together with the Tanzania National Roads Agency (TANROADS), immediately mobilized resources and personnel to restore the road.

They set up temporary camps in the worst-hit areas of Somanga Mtama and Matandu, where they coordinated efforts to clear the debris and repair the damaged infrastructure.

This swift action helped to reopen the road, allowing transportation to return to normal, and ensuring that citizens and businesses in the region could resume their activities without further delay.

Minister Ulega expressed his appreciation for the collective efforts of his team and other stakeholders involved. “We understand the importance of this road to the local economy,” Ulega said.

“Our team worked tirelessly to ensure that the road was opened as soon as possible to reduce the negative impact on the communities and the economy.”

The Deputy Speaker, Zungu, also acknowledged the collaborative efforts of all ministers involved in the restoration efforts.

He extended his gratitude to the Ministry of Works and other stakeholders who worked tirelessly to address the issue and ensure that the communication link was re-established in a timely manner.

“This intervention has been crucial in restoring the flow of goods and people, particularly in a region where economic activities are heavily reliant on road transport. It is commendable that the government acted quickly, demonstrating commitment to the welfare of the people,” Zungu said.

The restoration of the Southern Highway is expected to have a significant positive impact on the local economy, particularly for farmers, traders, and small businesses that depend on the movement of goods across the region.

With the road now operational, it is anticipated that there will be increased trade and improved access to essential services, ultimately contributing to the region’s economic recovery.

In conclusion, Parliament's praise for the government's swift actions highlights the importance of effective disaster management and the role of infrastructure in supporting the socio-economic development of the country.

Minister Ulega and his team’s efforts underscore the government’s dedication to improving transport networks and ensuring that the nation is resilient to natural calamities.

The restoration of the Southern Highway is a testament to the government's ability to respond swiftly and efficiently to challenges affecting the well-being of its citizens.
