On April 9, 2025, the Minister of State in the Vice President’s Office (Union and Environment), Engineer Mohamed Yusuph Masauni, appointed eight new board members to the National Environment Management Council (NEMC).
The appointments come as part of a strategic move to strengthen the governance and oversight of environmental management in Tanzania.
A statement signed by Sarah Kibonde Msika, Head of the Government Communication Unit in the Vice President’s Office expresses confidence that the new board members would provide strategic leadership to NEMC, guiding the implementation of national environmental priorities
The appointed board members are Dr. Abubakar Salum Rajab, Prof. Massimiliano Mabele, Prof. Theobald Frank Theodory, Eng. Bashir Jumaa Mrindoko, Mr. Said Habibu Tunda, Ms. Aveline Gatana Mongella, Haji Rajab Abdalla Hamid, and Eng. Kemilimbo Salome Mutasa. They will serve a three-year term, contributing to the council's mission to promote sustainable environmental practices across the country.
In a statement made during the announcement in Dodoma, Minister Masauni emphasized the importance of these appointments in enhancing the council’s role in enforcing environmental standards and advising the government on policy.
"The new board members are expected to provide strong leadership in ensuring effective implementation of environmental priorities, especially as the country addresses challenges like climate change and pollution," the statement reads.
These appointments, made under the authority granted by Section 19(1)(c) of the Environmental Management Act No. 20 of 2004, aim to bolster the country’s efforts to safeguard its natural resources and promote environmental sustainability.
Sarah Kibonde Msika, Head of the Government Communication Unit in the Vice President’s Office, also released a statement, stressing that the new leadership team would be instrumental in guiding the NEMC to further its mission in protecting Tanzania's environment.
