Government attorneys nationwide to convene in Dodoma

The President of the Public Attorneys’ Association of Tanzania (PBA), Advocate Amedeus Shayo, has announced plans for the Association’s annual national general meeting, which will bring together government attorneys from across the country.

The meeting will take place at the Jakaya Kikwete Convention Centre in Dodoma from April 14 to 15, 2025, with the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Energy,  Dr. Doto Mashaka Biteko, expected to officiate as the guest of honor.

Speaking at a press briefing in Dodoma on April 12, Advocate Shayo said the meeting will serve as a platform to assess progress in implementing the directive issued by the President of the United Republic of Tanzania,  Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan.

The directive was given on September 29, 2023, during the official launch of the Association, where the President called on government attorneys to safeguard national interests, particularly in areas such as the economy, public assets, and legal frameworks governing investment and trade.

Advocate Shayo emphasized that, under Article 59 of the Constitution of the United Republic of Tanzania (1977), the Attorney General is the principal legal adviser to the Government, and government attorneys act on behalf of the Attorney General.

As such, they carry a constitutional responsibility to protect national interests through the application of law.

“The primary goal of establishing the Public Attorneys’ Association was to create a professional platform that unites government attorneys to address shared concerns, promote the development of the legal sector, uphold ethics and standards within the public legal service, and enhance professionalism and competence through continuous capacity building,” he explained.

This year’s meeting will include attorneys and legal officers providing legal services across the public service covering ministries, departments, agencies, authorities, institutions, regional administrations, and local government authorities who are registered in the official roll of government attorneys maintained by the Attorney General’s office.

Advocate Shayo also urged all public sector employers including ministries, departments, agencies, public corporations, institutions, and regional and local government authorities to grant permission for their legal officers and attorneys to attend the upcoming national conference.
