On April 10, 2025, Dr. Tulia Ackson, the Speaker of the National Assembly of the United Republic of Tanzania and President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU), met with Shavkat Umurzakov Buranovich, the Mayor of Tashkent, Uzbekistan.
The meeting, held at the Mayor’s office in Tashkent, focused on enhancing bilateral relations between Tanzania and Uzbekistan.
During the discussions, both leaders explored opportunities to deepen cooperation in several key sectors, including diplomacy, tourism, healthcare, and education.
“Our conversation today was centered on finding ways to strengthen the ties between our two countries and to build sustainable partnerships that benefit our people,” said Dr. Tulia.
A major point of focus was the potential to establish a developmental relationship between the Tanzanian city of Mbeya and Tashkent.
“This partnership will allow us to work together on projects that promote growth in urban development, cultural exchange, and economic collaboration,” she added.
Both leaders recognized the significant benefits of exchanging expertise and resources to improve public services and overall quality of life.
“By collaborating in these sectors, we can share knowledge that will not only help in enhancing education and healthcare but will also contribute to the economic empowerment of our nations,” emphasized Mayor Umurzakov.
He reiterated the importance of such partnerships, noting, “City-to-city collaborations are critical in promoting mutual development. We must leverage each other's strengths for the greater good.”
Dr. Tulia was accompanied by Mr. Joshua Magigita, the Tanzanian Ambassador to Russia, who also serves as the country’s representative to Uzbekistan.
His presence underscored the importance of the diplomatic ties being forged between the two nations.
In his remarks, Mayor Umurzakov expressed a strong commitment to advancing the collaboration and indicated plans to visit Tanzania in the near future.
“I look forward to visiting Tanzania soon to further explore how we can enhance our relationship and create more avenues for collaboration,” he said. This visit is expected to further solidify the connection between the two cities and nations.
The meeting between Dr. Tulia and Mayor Umurzakov marks a significant step forward in strengthening the relationship between Tanzania and Uzbekistan.
