Basketball training for people with disabilities set for May

By Victoria Godfrey

Basketball stakeholders, enthusiasts, and players are invited to confirm their participation in a coaching and officiating training course specifically designed for wheelchair basketball.

The training will take place from May 13 to 17, this year, at JMK Park, Kidongo Chekundu in Dar es Salaam.

Abdallah Mpogole, the Secretary General of the Tanzania Wheelchair Basketball Association (TWBA), announced that registration is now open with a participation fee of TSh 40,000.

“The association has recognized that this is the right time to provide this training to the broader sports community, including primary and secondary school teachers, special schools, institutions supporting people with disabilities, and Tanzanians in general,” Mpogole said.

“The goal is to equip participants with foundational knowledge of wheelchair basketball, enabling them to help develop the sport and create meaningful opportunities for growth and inclusion.”

Mpogole emphasized that the training will focus on two critical areas: coaching and officiating. “This specialized training aims to equip individuals with both theoretical knowledge and practical skills in coaching and officiating wheelchair basketball,” he explained.

The training will involve both classroom sessions and on-court activities, with athletes with disabilities actively participating in both aspects.

“This will provide participants with hands-on experience in the sport and give them the opportunity to engage directly with players,” Mpogole added.

Wheelchair basketball, though a global sport, was introduced in Tanzania in the early 2000s. While participation has been modest, it has steadily grown over the years.

Mpogole also highlighted the growing demand for training, particularly for young children, women, and people in remote areas, stressing the need to bring sports opportunities to underserved communities, especially those with disabilities.

The course will be led by National Trainer Robert Manyerere, along with international referee Shabani Mahobonya, who will work alongside other local coaches and referees to deliver the training.
