Three unidentified individuals have tragically lost their lives in a fire following a head-on collision between two cargo trucks.
The incident occurred in the early hours of March 4, 2025, at the Nanenane area in Tungi, along the Morogoro to Dar es Salaam highway.
Morogoro Regional Police Commander, Alex Mkama, explained the circumstances of the accident: “The two trucks collided while trying to pass each other on a speed-reduction ramp,” he said.
"The impact caused both trucks to catch fire, resulting in the deaths of both drivers and one passenger."
One of the trucks involved in the collision, with registration number RL6652 from Rwanda, was transporting diesel fuel.
It collided with a Scania Continental truck, registered T 374 DLC, owned by Reliable Company. Mkama added, "The truck carrying fuel was severely damaged, and the fire spread quickly."
In response to the fire, fire rescue teams and other security agencies worked tirelessly to control the blaze and prevent further damage.
“The quick intervention of the rescue teams helped to contain the fire, preventing it from spreading further along the highway,” Mkama stated.
Preliminary investigations at the scene suggest that the accident occurred when the driver of the truck traveling from Morogoro to Dar es Salaam lost control of the vehicle.
"The driver was unable to control the truck, which was empty, and it veered into the opposite lane, colliding with the fuel-laden truck," Mkama explained.
The bodies of the three victims have been taken to the morgue at Morogoro Regional Referral Hospital. Commander Mkama urged all drivers to follow road safety regulations, particularly in areas requiring speed reduction: “It is crucial that drivers respect speed limits and other road safety guidelines to prevent accidents caused by reckless driving.”
Witnesses to the accident, including Juma Ramadhani and Mkombozi Mwengele, also voiced their concerns about driver behavior on the roads.
“Many of these accidents can be avoided if drivers take responsibility for their actions,” Ramadhani said. “It’s time for all of us to prioritize safety on the roads.”
