TARURA kicks off DMDP-II road projects in Dar es Salaam

By Alfred Zacharia

The Tanzania Rural and Urban Roads Agency (TARURA) in Dar es Salaam has officially begun the implementation of significant road construction projects under the second phase of the Dar es Salaam Metropolitan Development Project (DMDP-II).

These initiatives cover all five districts of the city: Ubungo, Ilala, Kinondoni, Temeke, and Kigamboni.

Engineer Geoffrey Mkinga, the Regional Manager of TARURA Dar es Salaam, confirmed the launch of the projects during a meeting with the Regional Road Advisory Committee.

He stated that the work had already begun, with contractors now present on-site to carry out initial groundwork.

“The DMDP projects officially started on January 15 this year. As of now, all contractors are on-site and handling preliminary tasks such as removing Tanesco and Dawasa infrastructure. This is crucial to ensure no disruptions when the major work begins,” Engineer Mkinga said.

He continued, "We’ve completed most of the initial contractual steps, and we’re now in the full implementation phase. It’s essential to remove the existing infrastructure to allow for the installation of the road equipment and machinery."

Furthermore, Engineer Mkinga addressed the rehabilitation efforts taking place in areas affected by the El Nino rains, stating that work to repair these regions is well underway. He also mentioned the execution of smaller-scale projects aimed at improving road conditions across the city.

With these developments, the DMDP-II road projects are set to significantly improve transportation across Dar es Salaam, easing traffic congestion and enhancing the overall efficiency of the city's road network.
