President Samia directs Ministry of Water to establish national water grid

President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan has directed the Ministry of Water to establish a National Water Grid, an ambitious initiative aimed at ensuring sustainable and equitable water distribution across Tanzania.

Speaking in Dar es Salaam at the climax of Water Week celebrations, which also marked the launch of the 2025 revised National Water Policy, she emphasized the need for an integrated and structured water supply system similar to the National Electricity Grid to guarantee access to safe and clean water for all Tanzanians.

"Water is a fundamental resource for life, economic growth, and national stability. We must ensure that all regions have access to water, regardless of their proximity to water sources," President Samia stated.

"Just as we have done with electricity, we must connect the entire country through a reliable water supply network," she added.

She directed Minister of Water Juma Aweso to lead the implementation of this initiative, ensuring that water is collected, stored, and distributed efficiently across all regions.

As part of the plan, the National Water Grid will feature zonal water collection centers, which will serve as regional hubs for gathering and redistributing water from various sources.

These centers will be strategically positioned across the country to improve access, particularly in areas facing frequent water shortages.

"This approach will enhance water security and reduce disparities in access. By establishing these collection centers, we can efficiently manage water resources and minimize wastage," President Samia explained.

She also underscored the need to protect water infrastructure, warning that damages to major pipelines could disrupt supply and pose serious health risks.

She urged Tanzanians to take responsibility in safeguarding water systems and ensuring their sustainability. Additionally, she called for the adoption of modern rainwater harvesting technologies, emphasizing that every drop of water matters in securing Tanzania’s future.

The establishment of a National Water Grid is expected to bridge regional disparities, enhance climate resilience, and support agricultural and industrial needs.

With Minister Aweso tasked with leading the initiative, the Ministry of Water is set to develop a framework that will integrate water resources into a single, reliable national system.

President Samia’s directive signals a new era in Tanzania’s water management strategy, reinforcing the government’s commitment to providing safe, clean, and sustainable water supply for all citizens.
