Airtel Africa’s recent commitment to training 25,000 Nigerian youth in digital and technology skills through the 3 Million Technical Talents (3MTT) programme signals a significant corporate alignment with Nigeria’s push for digital transformation.
The initiative, a Presidential mandate, is set to empower youth across 80 local government areas, further cementing Airtel’s role in fostering technological advancement in the country.
The telecom giant also announced 10 scholarships for Nigerian students to study technology-related courses at Plaksha University in India under the Airtel Africa Fellowship.
This move, facilitated through the Airtel Africa Foundation, underscores the company’s strategy to bridge the skills gap in the technology sector.
Beyond corporate social responsibility, these investments reflect a business strategy that aligns with Nigeria’s ambition to become a global tech hub.
By nurturing a digitally skilled workforce, Airtel Africa is also ensuring a sustainable talent pipeline that could benefit the company and the broader telecommunications ecosystem in the long run.
The announcement came after a meeting between Airtel Africa Chairman, Mr. Sunil Bharti Mittal, KBE, and Airtel Africa CEO, Sunil Taldar, with Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, at the State House in Abuja. Discussions covered Airtel Africa’s ongoing investment in Nigeria’s telecom infrastructure and digital economy.
“Nigeria remains a strategic market for Airtel Africa, and we are fully committed to supporting the government’s digital transformation agenda. Through initiatives like the Airtel Africa Fellowship and our investment in 3MTT, we are ensuring that the youth of Nigeria have access to world-class education and digital skills.

We commend President Tinubu’s vision for a technologically advanced Nigeria and are committed to playing our part in making that vision a reality,” Mr. Mittal said, emphasizing the strategic importance of Nigeria for Airtel Africa.
This pledge coincides with Airtel’s broader initiatives, including the Airtel-UNICEF Reimagine Education Programme, which has onboarded 1,260 schools and over 600,000 students to digital learning platforms like the Nigerian Learning Passport (NLP).
These programs align with Nigeria’s policy direction toward digital inclusion and economic diversification beyond oil.
Digital Infrastructure as Critical National Asset
Airtel Africa’s endorsement of the recent designation of telecom infrastructure as Critical National Information Infrastructure (CNII) highlights its recognition of the importance of safeguarding Nigeria’s digital backbone. With telecommunications being integral to financial inclusion, commerce, and governance, securing this infrastructure is a crucial step toward ensuring stability in Nigeria’s growing digital economy.
Moreover, Airtel Africa’s emphasis on financial inclusion through SmartCash PSB, its payment service bank, reflects the increasing convergence of telecommunications and financial services. As Nigeria pushes for greater digital banking penetration, companies like Airtel Africa stand to gain from expanding mobile money adoption.
Airtel Africa’s commitment to network expansion, service quality, and digital upskilling comes at a time when Nigeria is positioning itself as a key player in Africa’s digital revolution.
With initiatives like the 3MTT and Airtel Africa Fellowship, the company is not just investing in human capital but also reinforcing its competitive advantage in Nigeria’s telecom sector.
“Airtel is deeply invested in Nigeria’s digital future. We are expanding our network, driving financial inclusion, and creating opportunities for the people of Nigeria through technology and innovation. Our collaboration with the government through initiatives like the Airtel Africa Fellowship and 3MTT ensures that Nigeria remains at the forefront of Africa’s digital revolution,” Mr. Sunil Taldar stated.
By aligning its business objectives with Nigeria’s national development agenda, Airtel Africa is shaping the future of the country’s digital economy while positioning itself as a strategic partner in its technological evolution.
