The government, through the Tanzania Wildlife Management Authority (TAWA), has donated 295 desks worth TZS 25.9 million to primary and secondary schools in Simiyu Region.

This initiative aims to improve the learning environment in schools near the Maswa Game Reserve, as part of TAWA’s efforts to strengthen ties with the local community.

Beatus Maganja, TAWA's Public Relations Officer, explained that in partnership with Bushman Safari Trackers, a tourism hunting company, the desks, two tables, and two chairs were distributed to schools in Itilima and Bariadi districts.

Itilima received 190 desks, one table, and one chair, while Bariadi got 105 desks, one table, and one chair.

Maganja also noted that TAWA has a longstanding practice of returning benefits from conservation activities to the communities around protected areas.

The desks provided in Simiyu were funded by the revenue generated from conservation efforts in the Maswa Game Reserve.

He urged the people of Simiyu to continue supporting the government in protecting local resources to ensure ongoing benefits for both current and future generations.

Lung'wa School’s Acting Headteacher, Exavery Lusajo Mwasomola, and teacher Stephano Palangyo expressed their gratitude for the 100 desks, saying the donation has fully addressed the school’s desk shortage.

They also requested further support for building hostels, laboratories, and teachers’ housing.

Students at Lung'wa Secondary School in Itilima also praised the government, led by President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan, for the desks, stating they will help improve their studies and academic performance.

"We, the students of Lung'wa, are very happy to receive these desks and chairs. Before, we had to sit on the floor, and some students even carried their chairs during breaks due to the lack of desks," said Nchama Lusalo Sipewa, a Form Four student at Lung'wa Secondary School.
