Empowering Small-Scale Miners: The impact of model centers in Tanzania

The creation of model centers at the Lwamgasa-Geita and Katente-Bukombe mining sites has greatly improved the lives of local miners, especially small-scale miners like Fortunatus Luhemeja and Christopher Kadeo.

Fortunatus Luhemeja, CEO of Hexad, shared that his productivity has improved since he started using the services provided at the Lwamgasa model center.

He credits this improvement to the new mining technologies and professional advice offered by experts at the center.

These changes have boosted the miners' confidence, encouraging them to invest more in their businesses, thanks to the knowledge and resources they gain from the model centers.

Luhemeja also highlighted the important collaboration between the Ministry of Minerals and the State Mining Corporation (STAMICO).

This partnership ensures that trained professionals provide support in important areas such as engineering, environmental management, and financial practices.

As a result, miners are now able to adopt better methods, leading to improved mineral quality and more successful operations.

Likewise, Christopher Kadeo, a retired chairperson for Geita Region's artisanal miners, praised government efforts to support and develop the local mining industry.

He pointed to key initiatives such as the establishment of model centers, the provision of drilling equipment, and access to financial loans, which have all made a positive impact.

Kadeo encouraged other miners to embrace scientific methods in mining and avoid relying on superstitions, urging them to take full advantage of the learning opportunities offered by the model centers.

The stories of Luhemeja and Kadeo show deep appreciation for the government’s investments in the mining sector and the positive changes brought by the model centers.

The more efficient refining processes and better market access are clear signs of their success.

In conclusion, the experiences shared by these miners demonstrate the significant impact that knowledge, technology, and government support can have in driving sustainable growth in Tanzania’s mining industry.

As Luhemeja wisely said, “My people are perished for lack of knowledge,” emphasizing the importance of making informed decisions in the mining sector.
