Airtel Tanzania has stepped up its efforts to combat mobile fraud and raise awareness about secure communication services nationwide, in line with directives from the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA).

Recent police statistics from 2023 revealed that approximately Sh5.067 billion was stolen through mobile money networks, bank transfers, and automated teller machines (ATMs).

According to the TCRA Communication Statistics Report for the quarter ending September 2024, Airtel Tanzania has made remarkable progress in tackling mobile fraud.

The company recorded a significant 44 percent reduction in fraudulent attempts, with reported cases dropping from 6,069 to 3,408.

With the festive season approaching a period when customers are particularly susceptible to fraudulent calls and messages Airtel Tanzania’s Director of Customer Experience, Adriana Lyamba, reaffirmed the company’s commitment to combating fraud.

“We leverage tools such as bulk messaging, direct customer calls, and support from our service centers to educate and empower our customers,” said Lyamba.

“This initiative will spark vital conversations about cybersecurity and equip customers with the knowledge to identify and avoid mobile fraud. Additionally, our enhanced digital surveillance and tracking mechanisms ensure suspected fraudsters are quickly identified and brought to justice,” she added.

Lyamba also stressed the importance of safeguarding personal information, advising customers to create strong yet memorable passwords while avoiding obvious choices like birthdates.

In addition, she highlighted Airtel Money’s self-reversal feature, which allows users to correct transactions swiftly if they mistakenly send money to the wrong recipient.

Airtel Tanzania’s proactive measures underscore its dedication to ensuring a safe and secure digital ecosystem for its customers.
