Tanzania has secured a prominent victory in the global tourism arena, being named the World’s Leading Safari Destination at the prestigious 2024 World Travel Awards (WTA) ceremony, held on the picturesque island of Madeira in Portugal. This award celebrates Tanzania’s unrivaled safari offerings, cementing its place as a premier destination for wildlife enthusiasts around the world.
The World Travel Awards, established in 1993, are regarded as the highest accolades in the global tourism industry, recognizing excellence in various categories across continents and internationally. Often referred to as the “Oscars of Tourism,” these awards honor the destinations, companies, and organizations that have set benchmarks in the industry.
A Testament to Conservation and Sustainable Tourism
Speaking after Tanzania’s win, Dr. Hassan Abbasi, Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Natural Resources and Tourism, emphasized that the award reflects Tanzania’s enduring commitment to conservation and sustainable tourism, which have become a core focus of the country’s tourism policy.
“This award is a testament to Tanzania’s dedication to conservation, upheld by leaders across all administrations and furthered in the Sixth Administration under President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan,” Dr. Abbasi noted. “It’s also a recognition of our substantial investments in promoting tourism. The votes cast for Tanzania reflect the satisfaction of visitors who have experienced the unmatched natural beauty and authenticity of our wildlife reserves, including the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Ruaha.”
Tanzania’s Award-Winning Tourism Destinations and Operators
In addition to this global win, Tanzania recently claimed four major awards in the African continental category of the WTA, including the title of “Africa’s Leading Destination.” These accolades underscore Tanzania’s regional and global appeal and its standing as a premier African destination.
Highlighting Tanzania’s diversity in tourism offerings, Serengeti Balloon Safaris, a private operator offering hot-air balloon safaris over Serengeti and Ruaha National Parks, received the title of World’s Leading Balloon Safari Company. This unique safari experience allows travelers to view Tanzania’s iconic wildlife and landscapes from above, further elevating Tanzania's appeal as a top destination.
Recognition of Global Tourism Leaders
The ceremony also honored various other tourism hotspots worldwide. Notable awards went to Saint Lucia as the world’s top honeymoon destination, Greece (Athens) as the leading city destination, and Portugal as the world’s best beach destination. Peru was celebrated for its rich cultural and culinary tourism, while Spain (Madrid) was recognized as the leading meeting destination, and the Maldives as the world’s ultimate destination for travelers.
Tanzania to Host the 2025 Africa and Indian Ocean World Travel Awards
In a further endorsement of Tanzania’s tourism prominence, WTA President Graham Cooke announced that Tanzania will host the 2025 Africa and Indian Ocean World Travel Awards. This event is expected to draw prominent tourism stakeholders, further boosting Tanzania’s profile on the global stage and showcasing its scenic beauty and rich culture.
A Historic Milestone for Tanzania’s Tourism Sector
This global recognition marks a historic achievement for Tanzania’s tourism sector and signals a significant step forward in the nation’s tourism success story. The award not only strengthens Tanzania’s position as a top safari destination but also highlights its commitment to environmental sustainability and high-quality tourism experiences that leave a lasting impact on visitors.
