The Njombe Regional Administration has pledged its support to the Rural Energy Agency (REA) in a significant initiative to distribute 13,020 cooking gas cylinders across the region. This collaboration aims to promote the adoption of clean, safe energy among residents, reducing reliance on traditional cooking fuels that pose health and environmental risks.
Acting Regional Administrative Secretary, Mr. Joseph Mutashubirwa, announced the partnership today, November 19, 2024, following a presentation on the region’s REA project progress by REA’s Director of Alternative and Renewable Energy, Ms. Advera Mwijage.
"I applaud REA for its ongoing commitment to promoting the use of clean cooking energy. This initiative not only safeguards the environment but also supports the health and well-being of those who adopt it," remarked Mr. Mutashubirwa. He reassured REA of the region’s full support, emphasizing that Njombe will encourage residents to adopt the new cooking gas cylinders to foster economic growth and environmental preservation.
According to Ms. Mwijage, the distribution initiative will benefit residents in Njombe, Makete, Ludewa, and Wanging'ombe districts.
"Each district will receive 3,255 gas cylinders, distributed through Taifa Gas Company. We encourage residents to take advantage of this opportunity, with cylinders offered at a 50% discount," Ms. Mwijage explained.
Ms. Mwijage also highlighted REA’s parallel efforts to educate the public on the benefits and safe usage of clean cooking energy. This educational drive is designed to inspire a shift towards sustainable energy practices, ultimately aiming for a healthier and more environmentally conscious community.
Through this joint effort, REA and the Njombe Region are setting a strong example in Tanzania’s journey towards clean energy adoption and sustainable development.
