The Ministry of Sports has signed a contract with SUMA JKT, a construction company, to refurbish sports facilities across Tanzania in preparation for upcoming continental tournaments.

This contract, signed today, covers the renovation of multiple stadiums that will be used for the African Nations Championship (CHAN) for domestic league players, scheduled for early 2025, and the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2027, in which Tanzania will serve as one of the host nations.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Gerson Msigwa, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Culture, Arts, and Sports, emphasized that SUMA JKT was selected due to its proven ability to deliver high-quality results under tight deadlines.

With time being a critical factor, Msigwa noted that the project requires a strategic approach to ensure timely completion.

“We entrusted SUMA JKT with this project because we know they can work day and night. Time is short, and we need an operational approach to finish this work on schedule,” Msigwa said.

The government has already allocated TZS 8 billion to jumpstart the renovations.

“To facilitate this effort, the President has provided an initial TZS 8 billion to ensure this work begins immediately and is completed within the set timeframe, avoiding the risk of forfeiting our hosting rights,” he added.

Msigwa further explained that significant progress has already been made on some stadiums, such as the Benjamin Mkapa Stadium, which is nearing the final stages of completion. Meanwhile, the construction of a new stadium in Arusha is advancing steadily, currently 7% complete, with an expected handover by April 2026.

Morgan Nyoni, Director of SUMA JKT, affirmed the company’s commitment to meeting the deadlines, saying they are prepared to work continuously to ensure the project’s success.

“We’re ready to work day and night to complete this project on time. We have already started work on some stadiums, and others are in line for renovation,” said Nyoni.

The renovation will involve five sports facilities in Dar es Salaam: Major General Isamuyo Stadium, Leaders Club grounds in Kinondoni, the Horse Race Track in Oysterbay, Gymkhana grounds, and Losco grounds.
