Dar es Salaam – In a move to recognize academic excellence and inspire more youth toward careers in water management, the Energy and Water Utilities Regulatory Authority (EWURA) has awarded two exceptional graduates from the Water Institute, Florence Theonist and Emmanuel Nyaki, with laptops and a combined cash prize of six million Tanzanian shillings (three million per recipient).
The awards were presented by Hon. Jumaa Aweso (MP), Minister for Water, who served as the guest of honor at the 48th graduation ceremony held on November 13, 2024, at the Mlimani City Conference Hall in Dar es Salaam.
Florence Theonist graduated with a Diploma in Water Supply and Environmental Sanitation Engineering, while Emmanuel Nyaki earned a Diploma in Water Quality Laboratory Technology. Both graduates were recognized for their exceptional dedication and performance in their studies.
Representing EWURA’s Director General, David Linda, Senior Engineer for Water and Sanitation, spoke after the ceremony, underscoring EWURA’s commitment to fostering young talent in the water sector. He noted that by encouraging youth to pursue water-focused careers, EWURA hopes to expand the professional workforce needed to achieve national goals of reliable water access and sustainable management.
“As the regulator of the water sector, EWURA is acutely aware of the need for a skilled and motivated workforce to ensure high-quality services. Achieving universal access to clean and safe water—a key Sustainable Development Goal (SDG)—requires us to train and support talented individuals. That’s why EWURA is dedicated to partnering with institutions like the Water Institute to develop professionals capable of making this goal a reality,” Linda stated.
Florence Theonist expressed her gratitude for the award, explaining that the laptop would support her in technical assignments, especially since modern water engineering tasks rely heavily on advanced software and technological tools.
Emmanuel Nyaki, likewise, expressed appreciation and called on fellow students to stay committed to their studies, highlighting that professional skills and dedication are essential for improving Tanzania’s water sector and advancing the country’s sustainable development goals.
